Mary Karr: Poet, Memoirist, Catholic

I love hearing Mary Karr (b.1955) speak or read from her works. She's got a memorable vocal style, still tinged with Texas speak, and is quite charismatic.

Karr has four volumes of poetry out, including this year's Catholicized Sinners Welcome (HarperCollins), which I've ordered with great interest; and two excellent memoirs, The Liars' Club (1988) and its sequel, Cherry: A Memoir (2000).

Many libraries have at least one copy of the latter books on CD, plus you can find audio clips on the net; they can also be purchased.

Many of Mary Karr's fans (including me) also look forward to her next memoir. Orignally from Janis Joplin country, she now teaches at Syracuse University and is based in New York City.

  1. You keep posting all this cool stuff. I'll never be able to keep up. Summer is just a bad time, I get nothing done in the summer but nothing itself.

I've never heard of Mary Karr. Would you suggest starting out w/Liar's Club, or something else? --R

  3. Thanks, all for the comments! At some point, I'll make a list of books and movies, etc., on a linked web page so it's all in one place for future reference. Robin, I'd start with Liar's Club and see if you like her style. She's not unlike another Texan we know ;)

    Cheers, E'
