It/ll Be Better Tomorrow
A 2005 documentary on Hubert Selby, Jr. with the above title will have its New York City premier on July 5, 2006, at the Two Boots/Pioneer Theatre. Directed by Michael W. Dean and and Kenneth Shiffrin, it features a big lineup that includes Lou Reed. Selby wrote a number of stunning novels, but perhaps his most famous books are Last Exit to Brooklyn (1964) and Requiem for a Dream (1978). Selby (1928-2004), who also wrote the screenplay for the 2000 movie version of Requiem, was a fascinating person, too. This documentary will be illuminating, certainly.
As far as either Last Exit or Requiem, they are startlingly good, but I wouldn't recommend them for the squeamish or immature -- nor for those with delicate nerves, either. They are rough. But worth the ride. If you have nerves of steel.
Here's a Selby link with all sorts of new information:

It's raining today, the first day of summer, but I'm sure Selby's right, it/ll be better tomorrow.

I love Selby! Great post.
Requiem for a Dream", with Jennifer Connelly...
She has a beautiful face, alluring eyes, and a knockout figure. I think her first movie was "Once Upon a Time in America." I absolutely adored her in "The Rocketeer", and would probably have been arrested for stalking her if she lived anywhere near me at the time.
Unfortunately, I haven't liked her since I saw "Requiem for a Dream". I know she was only playing a role for a paycheck, but there are just some things you can't unsee.
All this suicide talk makes me want to dust off my old copy of Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson.
All this suicide talk makes me want to dust off my old copy of Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson. Maybe throw on Nirvana’s unplugged while I'm at it.
Haven't read anything by Shelby yet, but I really liked the movie version of Requiem for a Dream, and the soundtrack.
Wasn't Shelby the prison guard telling (Wayne's character) to keep stirring the mash potatoes till he puked.
I still have my "Career Opportunities" crush on Connelly.
Hey SR - "ass to ass."
oops, I have no idea how two different comments got posted. Probably the copy and paste?
Hey, all, thanks for the comments. Yes, Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous for all those reasons and more! I also liked her in House of Sand and Fog.
I wonder if we'll hear more about Hunter S. Thompson's last wish to have his ashes shot out of a cannon? Pretty cool way to go. And yeah, Selby appears in both those movies in cameo roles.
Hmm I left a comment here and it never posted! I was just saying that Requiem is one of my favorite books and utterly depressing- and that I am going to be picking up Last Exit very very soon.
