Spill the Wine

Over the long Independence Day holiday weekend, a lot will be going on in Detroit.

The 2006 Comerica Tastefest will showcase a big bunch of musical performances at The MotorCity Casino, Main Stage. I'll just list a few sentimental favorites, but more can be found here since the above hyperlink is not working: http://www.newcenter.com/tastefest/2006/music.htm

Saturday July 1, 2006: 8:30 p.m.
Ray Davies

New solo album: Other People's Lives. Front man for the Kinks, father of Chrissie Hynde's child. (I love the Kinks and bad boy Ray).

Monday, July 3, 2006: 5:30 p.m.
Mavis Staples

Lead singer of The Staple Singers (“I’ll Take You There,” “Respect Yourself,” etc.), Mavis can belt it out as the powerful gospel and soul singer she has always been. She sang at the same performance as Irma Thomas in Ann Arbor not too many years ago (Please see my March 21, 2006 post for a fuller account of it).

Tuesday, July 4, 2006: 3:00 p.m.
Eric Burdon and the Animals

Kind of ironic featuring a British Invasion band on Independence Day, isn't it?

On the other hand, American General Hull surrendered his Detroit garrison to a smaller Anglo-Canadian-Indian force during the War of 1812 and was later sentenced to death for cowardice and treason (commuted, but still).

As for the British, in London they showcase American bands and feature cowboy hats on this day, having no idea what July 4 is supposed to mean back in the USA. (They even celebrate Bastille Day there with a French twist.) In any case, the Animals put out a hard core of excellent songs, as did War. I've always liked them and wildman Eric, who wished he was born a black man. How about "It's My Life and I'll Do What I Want"?

If anyone checks these out, please report in! Not sure if I'll check any of it out myself this year, but I'm thinking about it. Note: The lead photo is of Mavis Staples back in the 1960s.

It's a Small World, and Getting Smaller Every Day

This is a weird coincidence (or is it synchronicity?): I posted about Mary Woronov, and Michelle's Spells posted about Fantasy Island and Hervé Villechaize. I throughly explored Mary's website and came across a connnection. If you go to Mary Woronov's website
click on "AND" for additional sections; proceed to Hervé and see "Photos by and with Hervé Villechaize," which include Mary posing nude for him. What the hell, what the heck? No explanation is given. Were they friends? Did they date? How did these sessions come about, anyway? Ah, the mystery. More will be revealed, although in a couple pix Mary is quite revealed already, and quite memorable in her starkers, as the English say. Is everything connected to everything else upon closer examination?

Spill the Wine, hope you have a good time whatever you do this weekend!

Thanks all for the comments! Robin, I saw that earlier one and you've read my mind ;) Or know astrology well. Touche!

Luma, it really is a small world -- fewer even than "Six Degrees of Separation." Good luck to Brazil on Saturday.

Beijus!

The world is a very small place, Eric. For instance, when I was taking my creative writing class, a certain fellow student new exactly who I was. Turns out, his brother is doing time where I work. Of course I had to report this to my employer. Standard procedure. --Jim
