Three Women
I found this small photo at an indoor flea market in Downington, Pennsylvania, the kind of place where you can put anything you want in a cardboard box or paper bag for under $10. I was drawn to the mystery of it -- what's the story of these three women in the picture? Where and when is this set? What's happening, exactly? Late 1940s? What's the woman on the far right looking back for? Who took the shot? Why wasn't it labelled? How did it end up at a flea market, anyway?
In addition to the mystery, I was taken by the woman in the middle, a doppelgänger for someone I once dated (not the clothes, but the face, hair, eyes, and gesture). And doesn't the woman on the left look like an irritated waitress at a diner or five and ten counter?
Dear interested readers, what do you think? Furthermore, why am I still keeping this? It was serendipity that I found it today, actually, loading some equipment for a friend. It sort of tumbled out of the past, so here it is, asking for some sort of new response, I suppose. Credit feng shui, if you will.
Ciao!

I'd say the mystery lies in the resemblance of the middle woman to someone in your past. What feelings does this picture arouse? Anything unresolved there? What was the gift this woman gave to you when you were together? If it's not too personal, I'm interested to know your response. Cheers, R
Hmmmmm. Interesting. I love looking at pictures from back in the day. Things were so different then.
Thanks for the comments, R & S.
Robin, she was WILD (a waitress at the Looking Glass in CHapel Hill, and undergrad. at UNC), got me to drop everything (including a previous girlfriend) and go to Europe with her, then while we were traveling separately for a week she met an Australian dude whom she eventually married (after we got together again in between), had a daughter with, and divorced. We kept in touch a good while and she invited me to the wedding, etc. Last we exchanged email was a couple years ago and she was back in North Carolina running a large state educational program. Her gift was to inspire me to leap into the abyss, with faith ;) We hitch-hiked around Europe with little money and had many adventures, all very exciting. I was 22, she was 19. Sort of like the Sam the Lion's response in The Last Picture Show to Lois, I suppose. It took a while, but I was able to find someone else who could rile me up just as crazily ;) Hmm, have to ponder the unresolved part. . . . Thanks for asking.
Cheers, E'
Interesting, Erik. Sounds like great adventure for your Sag. soul! If nothing seems unresolved, maybe you're just in need of something new. When I've felt confined or bored, I've noticed myself thinking of people in my past who've symbolized adventure. We all need something to look forward to; maybe it's time to plan your next escapade! Cheers, R
Hey Robin,
thanks for the insightful, thoughful comments. I'm not bored, but maybe a little restless. Working on a new escapade, as you suggest.
Cheers, E'
