Running with Scissors

Running with Scissors, based on Augusten Burroughs' 2002 book and directed by Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy, is scheduled for an October 11, 2006 USA release. It has an R rating "for strong language and elements of sexuality, violence and substance abuse." After reading the dark and highly entertaining memoir, this sounds about right. Definitely not for the Disney crowd.

Joseph Cross plays the young Augusten Burroughs (a pen name created after William S. Burroughs to protect the complicit), the always compelling Annette Bening stars as his nutty mother Deirdre, and rough and tumble Alec Baldwin appears as his alcoholic father. The choice of Brian Cox as Dr. Finch is an inspired one (he and Brad Pitt were about the only good thing going for the epic Troy); Joseph Fiennes, no stranger to smarmy characters, inhabits the role of Neil Bookman, Augusten's most determined tormentor. Three other good choices: Jill Clayburgh as Agnes Finch, Evan Rachel Wood as Natalie and Gwyneth Paltrow as Hope, one of my favorite characters in the book.

I love Augusten Burroughs' books, and though Running with Scissors is not my favorite of his several works by a long shot, it is a vivid tale and should make for a mordant, interesting and fun film in the same way that HBO's Six Feet Under makes for a good series.

Clips from Running with Scissors are available at Sony Pictures.

Today's Rune: Journey.

Ciao!

The title alone makes me want to see it. I guess I'm into catchy phrases or jingles. Perhaps I should've went into advertising.

Thanks for the congrats on my recent milestone. --Jim

Thanks all for the comments! Always welcomed! R, SFU rocks, of course; and Jim, Augusten Burroughs was a marketing/ad guy for years, so it makes sense. S, haven't seen N/T yet. Will check it out. Ciao! E'

I have yet to pick that book up! It's been calling to me from the bookstore, but I have been trying to get books that aren't quite as... hyped up. I'm struggling to read The Devil Wears Prada because the movie just about ruined the book for me.
