The Trial

1. First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

2. In Franz Kafka's The Trial / Der Process (1925), the protagonist Josef K. is hounded to death by government elements for no apparent reason. A sinister process of absurdity. In 2007, we live under an equally sinister process of absurdity: the Cheney-Bush regime. Scooter Libby, the VP's apparent fall guy, was found guilty of perjury while helping cover up phony pretexts for invading Iraq. But thanks to G.W. Bush commuting his sentence yesterday, he will serve no jail time. Not even Paris Hilton jail time. What a joke.

3. I hereby petition the government for a redress of grievances. Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, all of your people, please do the right thing and promptly resign and exile yourselves to somewhere far away from my "Homeland." If you do so, and give all your tax-paid salary back to the rest of us, apologize to the world for your corruption and stupidity, and go away forever without another word, I'll consider my grievances reasonably redressed.

Since he "is" the fall guy it hardly seems fair for him to serve jail time when the people responsible get off scott free. I have no anger toward him. It's the ones above him I'm troubled by, but more for the whole fact of invading Iraq rather than the pretext stuff.

It's been years since I've read "The Trial." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Josef K beg his captors to let him know what he is charged with, but never really gets an answer (or should I say he gets a President Bush type of explanation). As for Scooter Libby, I'm hoping the Shrubs explanation is the last straw for whatever little approval rating he has left.
