Boom Boom in Iraq

The Anglo-American occupation of Iraq is a mess and the British are pulling out, leaving the USA to hold the bag. The Bush BS machine is now making muddled and confused comparisons with Vietnam. This is not irony. This is another dish of stupidity. More than 3,700 American soldiers dead, nearly 30,000 wounded. Fourteen killed in a Black Hawk crash today. Because no draft, no effective outcry.

"Democratic institutions are not necessarily the way ahead in the long-term future." -- Brigadier General John Mick Bednarek, Task Force Lightning, Diyala province, Iraq. Freaky! But: It's too late to fall in love with Sharon Tate.*

Do another novena for the dead in Iraq. Another jeremiad in another hot summer.

"What fresh hell is this?" Dorothy Parker's birthday. "It's not the tragedies that kill us, it's the messes."

John Lee Hooker's birthday (so far as I know). "I don't want to go to Vietnam."

Today’s Rune: Possessions.

Birthdays: Virginia Eliza Missy Clemm Poe, Achille-Claude Debussy, Dorothy Parker, Leni Riefenstahl, Henri Cartier-Bresson, John Lee Hooker, Ray Bradbury, Micheline Presle, E. Annie Proulx, Valerie Harper, Cindy Williams, Laura Breckenridge.

*Jim Carroll, "It's Too Late."

Erik you know as well as i this is only coming as a surprise to them who were carried on by intense nationalist feeling after 9/11. The days of kill anyone, someone, doesn't matter who or what the outcome is, just kill something for this grevious injury done to our morally upright, Jesus Loving, nation.

But on the other hand you also know my mind, if you are going to start a fight you finish it with every weapon in your arsenal no matter the "collateral" damage.

But as a codicil to that i do believe that Congress should put us back under the auspices of the world court so them that decided to invade a sovereign nation can be tried as the war criminals they are, because no American court would put Bush and Cheney in the docket like they did Hussein.

"It's not the tragedies that kill us it's the messes." is very accurate.

Very apropos - I'm with Charles - love the quote...so true.
We can survive the tragedies. It's the messes we've made that are destroying us.
Goes the same for my life.
Have a good one, Mr Erik :)

Great post: Iraq, Dorothy Parker, John Lee Hooker...wow.

I'm starting to notice that Bush backers are beginning to acknowledge that "mistakes were made" (classic weasel words) but that now we have no choice but to stick with it. It's sickening, essentially saying "we've f*cked this up beyond all recognition, but we have to stay now because it will be a worse bloodbath if we leave."

And the balls to bring up Vietnam as a JUSTIFICATION for this?!? Sheesh.

Listening to Presidential Candidates is not comforting. They seem so unfree to tell the truth - assuming some of them actually have the knowledge and a desire to make things better, in American life as well as in Diplomacy.
I worry that if they're chicken in the campaign phase, they'll likewise be overpowered when they get the votes.
