The Devil's Arcade

1. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, turned 55 today. Though his term as president ends in 2008, he's consolidating his power and may become prime minister until 2012, when he will be eligible (under the Russian constitution) to run for the presidency again. He is a man to keep on the radar screen. With an 80% approval rating in Russia, his authoritarian tactics are scary, intimidating, and seemingly unstoppable. And he means to bring the sexy back to Russia -- and on the world stage. (Picture credit: João Pedro de Magalhães).

2. Bruce Springsteen has a new album -- Magic. He's a man on a freedom mission -- is there anybody out there who will listen? Yes!

3. John Mellencamp turned 56 today. He may not wield Putin's power, but he does entertain and, like the Boss, is a man on a mission. He, too, believes in enlightened patriotism, clearly.

4. Nazi Heinrich Himmler's birthday today. Best not to forget it, especially with fascist tendencies well in play in the USA. It's amazing that such hideous dorks as Himmler, Goebbels, Göring and Hitler could weasel their way into power. But then again -- when I look around . . . . . hmmm . . . . .

5. Apartheid sign -- South Africa before the emergence of the "Rainbow Nation." George Santayana / Jorge Agustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana : "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." (Life of Reason, Reason in Common Sense, 1905, p. 284).

Let's also not forget that Santayana's "motto" was posted at the entrance to Jonestown. Anything can be twisted out of its original meaning with Big Brother at the helm.

6. Bishop Desmond Tutu, enemy of apartheid, proponent of the Rainbow Nation concept, turned 76 today.

7. Does Charlotte Perrelli look Swedish? Not hardly. The 32-year old Swedish singer has interesting fashion sense. Not exactly an Abba look, eh?

Today's Rune: Fertility.

Birthdays: Heinrich Himmler, Desmond Tutu, Thomas Keneally, Diane Ackerman, John Mellencamp, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, Charlotte Perrelli.

By the looks of that first pic, Putin should play poker. No getting excited there. No mechanical heart to go THRUM, SWISH, CLICK! THRUM, SWISH, CLICK!

As for Cougar, aka Mellencamp, his Jenna song is creating a bit of controversary.

Charlotte definitely beats the streaotypes and I like that about her.

Charlotte's great - didn't know Mellencamp was still going. Bruce Springsteen: "there's a code of silence, and it can't go on.."
