Venus and the Razorblades!

When I was a kid trick-or-treating, there weren't any parents or adult guardians accompanying me and my friends. We were just given a pep talk and sent on our merry way. "Watch out for razorblades in apples and opened candy wrappers." That was the only cautionary advice.

A friend of mine assures me that razorblades in apples was always an urban myth with no real basis. There were no razorblades in any apples, red or green. I believe her. Now kids have to worry about lead poisoning in their Chinese-made toys, I suppose.

Back during punk and New Wave days, record labels with names like Stiff, Slash, and Bomp rolled out the slapdash product by the score (some of it fantastic). Somehow I got a Bomp compilation that included "Punk-O-Rama" by Venus & the Razerblades (1977).

When Iggy Pop was young and pretty
And the Dolls ruled New York City
Out on the West Coast there was a band
Venus and the Razorblades, we took our stand

I remember chuckling at their boast (after they rattled off their spiritual mentors):

We who will never fade
Venus -- and the Razorblades!

They were right, though -- I still remember them thirty years later. Around 2004 they came out with a new album, including an update of "Punk-O-Rama" and even briefly toured: Venus, Bonnie Lee, Nicki Razorblade, Michelle Day, and Brutal Boy. But the first post-Sex Pistols punk band I ever heard of in North Carolina was Johnny Vomit & The Leather Scabs.

Today's Rune: Wholeness.

Happy Halloween!
