Pakistan: Another Daddy-O Suspends the Constitution

General Pervez Musharraf, President of nuclear-armed Pakistan and Chief of Staff of the Pakistani Army, today declared a State of Emergency, suspending the constitution. Prior to this move, his approval rating was widely reported to be about as bad as US President G.W. Bush's. In both cases, power is the name of the game. Power, wealth, and corruption. Could the de facto Bush-Cheney junta be prevented from doing the same thing in the USA?

Citing external and internal threats and fearing the next election, Musharraf is desperately clinging to power.

Pakistan's strategic location is worth noting.

Never mind: it's time to put on some Lulu and "Take Your Mama For A Ride"! Lulu (b. Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie) is only 59! In Pakistan, one is no longer allowed to listen.

Aria Giovanni turned thirty today. She was briefly married to guitarist John 5 (b. John Lowery, Grosse Pointe, Michigan). In Pakistan, images of Ms. Giovanni are now banned.

Today's Rune: Fertility.

Khudaa haafiz! All aboard for funtime!

"Witnesses said troops were deployed at Pakistan Television and radio stations, and most phone lines were down. Most private television channels were taken off the air. Other troops sealed off the thoroughfare where the presidency building, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court are located." -- Reuters

W has proven that the constitution is nothing more than words on paper, the man with the biggest gun always wins. Yes "A state of emergency" could be declared here and then the proof will come out...will this psychopath use Combat hardened American troops against American citizens and jail all the dissenters who have a large voice...all depends on who wins the election a year away if things go as they have in Pakistan and will that person want to fight Iran.

Erik,

You may want to consider giving Musharraf the benefit of the doubt, given the nature of those trying to topple him.

Taliban-ruled Pakistan, complete with nukes, is the stuff of nightmares.

As some will argue, "Daddy-O knows best, Constitution be damned."

As for the Shrub ... some will argue that right wing burning bush knows best.

Pakistan's business is their own. I am a bit worried about who might take over if Musharref goes down. The world is not a safe place. I doubt Bush would declare martial law. He's more apt to get out of the hassle of being president and go back to enjoying the benefits of fame and money.

Thanks all for the comments!

1. Walking Man: this has certainly happened in the past -- Germany post-WWI Freicorps veterans becoming vigilante enforcers, easing fascist takeover.

2. Stepehen, I do understand why, but two wrongs don't make a right; this is throwing gas on the fire; Islamic extemists have succeeded in crippling democracy; Shah of Iran took the strongman approach and ended up inspiring Islamic revolution; let's hope India, China and Russia will balance power in the region.

3. Indeed, the Bush people have their ironfist advocates.

4. Danger! Danger!

5. I can see why the Dadaists relocated to neutral territory during WWI. If there's an English speaking equivalent, it's worth considering if all hell breaks loose.
