Detroit still manufactures stuff besides automobiles. Here are some examples of food products made in Detroit, with long traditions. Vernors (formerly Vernor's) Ginger Soda was started up by an American Civil War veteran in 1866. Vernors is stronger, smokier and sharper than ordinary ginger ale. If you've ever had ginger beer, that's what I'm talking about. Still made in Detroit, it's now part of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc.
Faygo (originally the Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works) dates back to 1907 and is now owned by National Beverage Corporation. At 101, the plant is located near Knight Light Candle at 3579 Gratiot Avenue. How about some red pop?
Germack Pistachio Company, started in 1924, is located in the Eastern Market. Pistachios, nuts, dried fruits, all of it!
Better Made Snack Foods, started in 1930, is located at 10148 Gratiot Avenue. Chips, anyone?
La Jalisciense Tortilla Factory in Mexicantown (2650 Bagley) dates back to 1946 -- right after World War II (a parallel to Vernors and the Civil War). Nearby is Gloria's Bakery, my favorite bakery in Detroit.

When I was a kid in Cincinnati, Red Pop was the height of living. We were only allowed if for very special occasions.
Ha ha ha ah ha, I've been told that in other parts of the country Faygo is sold as a specialty soda for better than $2 a pop. I remember paying a dime for 120z. A childhood wasn't complete without Red Pop eh?
Better Made is the best chip on the planet. Thats one thing no one but a Detroiter can get fresh. Erik ever see those truck loads of potatoes unloaded? They tip the entire trailer at about a forty five degree angle to unload it into a hopper.
Vernors hot, cold, winter, summer or fall no other ginger soda is like it. You can do things with Vernors that Canada Dry and the others just won't hold up to.
Maybe its time to head to the EM and back to MexicanTown. I missed the Totilla Factory and Gloria's Bakery.

I've been known to get Better Mades shipped to TN along with Kowalski kielbasa.
Wouldn't it be nice if ICP (Insane Clown Posse) could do a Faygo Red Pop Commercial. As for Vernors, it cuts the whiskey just fine.
I haven't seen Vernors since I lived in Ontario, where you couldn't GIVE it away.
