Hope Springs Eternal in the Human Breast

Today with wind chill, Detroit was as cold as the North Pole yet still, hope springs eternal in the human breast* and maybe two of the Big Three will make it, and two out of three ain't bad.

Meanwhile, in time for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, here's a cool new book to check out:

Margery Krevsky, Sirens of Chrome: The Enduring Allure of Auto Show Models (Momentum Books, December 2008). In addition to stellar photos, there's a lot of good text, all of it well worth the sticker price.

Perhaps the most hopeful thing of all is that Barack Obama will become President of the United States of America next Tuesday. Perhaps there will be a ceasefire in Gaza just in time.

*Alexander Pope, ca. 1734; and there's also this of his, from 1717:

How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd . . .

Today's Rune: Journey.

Was it cold yesterday? Hmmm I spent more time without the covering of the house than I have in quite a time, maybe that is why my ungloved fingers went black and fell off. Here I thought it was simply a sign of age, shedding unneeded extremities.

Now with the NAIAS open and in full bloom I am drawn to the annual rite of winter. Maybe I'll just continue my habit of not going though so the gods of autodom can run on unimpeded of a skeptics presence. Keep the money and show me the science.

2 of 3 ain't good enough...at one time there were 85 American car companies.

2 and a wake-up then we will see the left hand fork appear. Good for us.

I heard that even Honda took a loss last year, for the first time in 30 years or something. The global economy is weak.

Things got a little milder here today after what for us is cold weather, 30s most of the week with some 20s.

Looks like a cool book.

I've enjoyed the coverage on CNN today. A new train is coming.
