Pennsylvania Six Five Thousand
Given that I was born in Pennsylvania, today was a great day that knocked all other stuff to the back burner, at least briefly. Why? Because both the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers won this round of their playoff games, that's why! (Eagles over NY Giants, 23-11; Steelers over Chargers, 35-24).
These groovy cool metro areas of Philly and Pittsburgh were also largely responsible, by the way, for Barack Obama's Pennsylvania win on election day 2008.
Plus 82-year old Joe "JoePa" Paterno's latest Penn State team won the Big Ten and finished number eight in college football, so it's all good for the Commonwealth.
Do you have any favorite teams you've supported over the years? I don't watch (or really care) nearly as much as when I actually played football back in high school, but I am most definitely still loyal to the exact same NFL teams as I was in the late 1970s. In no exact order, they would be:
Philadelphia Eagles
Minnesota Vikings
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions
Green Bay Packers
New York Giants
Pittsburgh Steelers
Perennial "enemies:"
Miami Dolphins
Dallas Cowboys
New England Patriots
Washington Redskins (though I liked them, and also the Baltimore Colts with Johnny Unitas, as a little kid in the late 1960s)
Here's to Pennsylvania 6-5000: Zowie Shebang, Scooby Scooby Doo, Gabba Gabba Hey . . .

Erik, the Detroit Lions? Are you kidding me? Why go public with this? At least I view their games alone in my basement where nobody can see me (that is: if they're not blacked out). I certainly wouldn't pay the price of admission.
*shrug* I've Never followed any sport's team or any sport. Many have said I am demented because of it. I doubt that is why I am twisted though.
I just hope someone beats Baltimore. Other than that I'm good.
I can remember sitting in a snow storm while the Vikings played, the duh moment when the RV left, the one we used as a clue to where we parked our car! Those were the days....
Since cheering for the Bears seemed an exercise in futility (until 1985-86, at least), I always had alternate teams I rooted for. The Vikings were my number one alternate (prescient, since I ended up marrying a Minnesota girl), but they led to more heartbreaks than the Bears, getting to the Superbowl and never winning. I also liked the Steelers a lot.
In baseball, the Cubs paralleled the Bears' frustration-inducement. I substituted cheering for the Tigers and Red Sox. After the humilating loss to the Padres in the 1984 NL playoffs, this Cub fan was especially cheering for the Tigers.
Does the Alpena Wildcats count? The whole town comes out for the games!
