The Pop Life
Happy birthday to Mr. Pop. First bit of recent Iggy Pop news: it seems now that The Passenger, an Iggy & The Stooges biopic, is on hold, making it even more mythical than The Gospel According to Janis, a long-proposed Janis Joplin biopic. (Fore more on the Iggy side of things, see: Brock Thiessen, "Iggy Pop Nixes Biopic," Exclaim! News, 3/31/2009, http://www.exclaim.ca/)
Next bit seems to put Iggy in some weird new astral corner, possibly near Billy Bob Thornton and Joaquin Phoenix -- or are all three stooges simply pulling our legs?
“I just got sick of listening to idiot thugs with guitars banging out crappy music,” he says -- but is he entirely serious? Is this a phase, Iggy's Blue Period? Iggy belting out a French tune in the spirit of Édith Piaf seems too bizarre to be true, but truth is stranger than fiction.
Will Iggy's song "King of the Dogs" become a top 40 hit? Maybe somewhere.

That's awesome! I saw the Ig, with the Stooges, about two years ago, the day after he turned 60!
My kids and I were talking about Iggy this weekend-- the irony that after prodigious drug and alcohol use, he's still around, and poor Ron Asheton, who, from all reports, was much more prudent, passed away last year. I guess it pays to have a Lust For Life.
Did he collaborate with Tom Waits?
I love that song! Chairman of the bored, now the King of the Dogs... and his birthday is Earth day - how'd I miss that?! Remember, St. Iggy got his early musical exposure sneaking into black blues clubs as a kid - this venture doesn't seem so odd to me in that light. Oh oh, the endless sea...

The Igster rocks it out!
Thanks all for the comments! Johnny, indeed. WM/Mark, they do appear nervously together in a scene from Coffee & Cigarettes. JC Anon, you betcha, man, and Jodi -- Exactly true.
Cheers all!
This is fantastic news. Who cares if he's pulling anyone's leg?
Iggy truly is God, and who the hell has the charisma to play in in a film, anyway?
