The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

Opening this Friday: a newly invigorated version of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. Johnny Yen wrote about the original 1974 version some time ago. I remember digging the David Shire soundtrack and overall feel of the film, the sociological take on New York City in the 1970s, and the interaction of characters. Jerry Stiller, Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw and Martin Balsam are all outstanding, if memory serves.

The new version looks good enough to see at the weekend. I like how the trailer updates the ransom from a million bucks overall to a million bucks per passenger. This time, we've got Denzel Washington, John Travolta, James Gandolfini, John Turturro and Luis Guzmán. I'm not usually a fan of remakes, but this one really could be an exception. Next weekend: Woody Allen's Whatever Works.

Today's Rune: Movement.

I really liked the origina. Good point re '70s New York. They did a TV version with Edward James Olmos which was not bad either. This one should be interesting.

The original, which I finally saw a few months ago, was incredible. Great cast-- the late, great Robert Shaw was one of my favorite actors. Hard to believe they'll be able to improve on the original.

This looks pretty good. Travolta makes a good villain.

Erik, this one sounds good. Got some of my favorite heavy hitters starring in it.
