Costa-Gavras' Z on the Big Screen

Thanks to Rialto Pictures, Costa-Gavras' über cool 1969 film Z has been touring around the USA, and I'm going to see it -- in Austin, Texas. Tonight! Here's a link: http://www.rialtopictures.com/z.html

Z is showing tonight at the Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress Avenue, in Austin, same place where a few years ago, I saw a big screen showing of Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964).

Thanks much to San Antonio Bill and GG for hosting . . .

Today's Rune: Flow.

The wonderful folks at Criterion have also recently rereleased a special edition. Usually, they clean up and sharpen the digital print and add a bunch of great extras.

Saw Kurosawa's "Ran" at the Music Box, an art theater here in Chicago. I now own the Criterion dvd, but think that everyone should see it on the screen once. When I saw it at the theater, movie critic Roger Ebert was behind me in line.

I never heard of it, sounds interesting. Sadly enough, here in Detroit not many folks have heard of "Ocean of Pearls" which is by far the best movie I've seen this year. Who needs Hollywood movie directors coming to Michigan, when we have an excellent one right here in Troy.

Eric,

I have fond memories of seeing Renoir's The Rules of the Game at the Paramont in Austin a couple of years ago, followed by a nice dnner at a Morrocon place, Marakesh, further down Congress near the Capital grounds. On the way back to my hotel, I saw the biggest cock roach I had ever seen wadling down Congress. As I stared at it, I heard a women say as she walked past, "Yep, you could put a saddle on 'em."

Have fun.

Mark

Thanks all for the comments! It was like traveling to see a sepcial art exhibit or concert.

Johnny, right on. Cool that Ebert was there. Got to see that in Philly while at grad. school. JR, will ook out for that -- if it's on DVD, will order it. Mark K., sounds fun. Also saw the Renoir in Philly, at the Temple Cinematheque. Not sure if that's still operating, but it was fantastic while it lasted. Jodi, sweet!
