Another Post About Buildings and Food

As a follow-up to the last post, more about Woolworth's and its history. First, there's Remembering Woolworth's: A Nostalgic History of the World's Most Famous Five-and-Dime by Karen Plunkett-Powell (1999, 2001). Lots of photos included.

For a more recent examination, check out Jean Maddern Pitrone's F.W. Woolworth and the American Five and Dime: A Social History (2007), which also includes photos.

And a little more about Woolworth's and the American Civil Rights movement.

Soon after the Greensboro sit-ins, Martin Luther King, Jr., arrived in Durham, North Carolina, and paid a visit to the Woolworth's downtown, February 1960. Photo by Jim Thornton, Durham Herald-Sun. For more on King and Civil Rights activities in Durham, see: http://www.durhamcountylibrary.org/dcrhp/mlk.php

Thanks for the comments, dudes.

Mark/WM, In response to the Greensboro sit-ins, Woolworth's suspended counter service while they tried to figure out what to do. So, when MLK checked out the Durham WW counter, it was a symbolic gesture (so far as I know).
