Grand Hotels: Old Point Comfort, Virginia

I remember fondly a New Year's Eve in the mid-90s spent at the Chamberlin Hotel, Old Point Comfort, Virginia, adjacent the hallowed grounds of Fort Monroe.  Two hotels named the Hygeia (named after the Greco-Roman goddess of health and the Moon) stood on the same site, and among its ghostly roamers is Edgar Allan Poe, who spent time there while on garrison duty in 1828 under the name Edgar A. Perry.

The entire Fort Monroe complex would make for an excellent college or university campus. Since that fun New Year's Eve celebration, the Chamberlin  has been converted into a nifty fifty retirement community. "The Chamberlin has 133 beautifully appointed rental apartment homes with the most remarkable waterfront and sunset views in Hampton Roads:" Here's a link to the official website: http://www.historicchamberlin.com/
