Haiti
Poor Haiti. Early reports are grim following a massive earthquake . . . Port-au-Prince in a shambles, homeless survivors staggering in the ruins by the thousands. . .
And I think of Voltaire's Candide, staggering through Lisbon: "The same day the earth sustained a most violent concussion. Candide, terrified, amazed, desperate, all bloody, all palpitating, said to himself: If this is the best of all possible worlds, what then are the others?"
