John Lee Hooker in Detroit: The Women In My Life
Today at work I had John Lee Hooker's Detroit year tracks playing in the background; "The Women In My Life" from the early 1950s jumped out. It's a nice-sounding song, pretty mellow for JLH. Sometimes it's called (as above) "Four Women In My Life." That's because, as the song observes, he loves four women: his mother, his sister, his sweetheart and his wife . . . (Sometimes "wine" is substituted for wife, but last time I checked, wine is not a woman).
This reminds me of the Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas' "You Can Have My Husband But Please Don't Mess With My Man:"
Now, when I was with my husband he was really mean
But when I'm with my man he treats me like a queen
You can have my husband
But please don't mess with my man
I'm telling all you women . . .

We need to bring all the bad ass musicians back to Detroit and restart the small juke joint clubs they played in. Or at least a new non electronic generation of them.
