We All Know the Story of the Prodigal Son

Prodigal Sons in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Others have already written beautifully about this celebratory moment (see Jodi's post at The J Spot, for example),  so here's a brief and happy salute to The Stooges (aka Iggy Pop and The Stooges) and Jimmy Cliff! And oh yeah, to ABBA and The Hollies, too!

If it's possible, until now Jimmy Cliff may have been even less appreciated than Iggy and Co. -- in the USA.  Here's a song predating The Harder They Come by a couple of years -- "Viet Nam" (alt. "Vietnam.")

"Viet Nam, Viet Nam -- hey -- Viet Nam
Somebody please stop that war now!"

Today's Rune: Initiation.

We stopped Viet Nam but not war, not for long. As soon as they could they embroiled us in more ever increasing wars. And when this one ends there will be a little respite til we go and do it all over again.

I hear Iggy choked up during his acceptance spiel at finally making it. I thought he'd turn them down when he saw ABBA was in the same class.

You had me until "Abba." That was just wrong, man, just wrong.

The Harder They Come was one in a small collection of vhs films in our home when i was a kid. I have a feeling I would understand it now, didn't get it then. My parents said he was some kind of star musician, I just saw blackness and humidity (unusual combination on screen in my experience at that time, except for Nigerian productions) so I didn't engage or enjoy it at all.
