Time Tunnel: Early Encounters With Television, Part 2

By 1966-1968, everything went wild, and that's just on TV. And I remember the kaleidoscope. After East Stroudsburg, we moved to Chicago (Justice, Illinois). A couple years later we moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. In that window, there was the nightly suppertime news, including riots and Vietnam and body counts. After school, Batman and Dark Shadows. Green Hornet. Time Tunnel.

I specifically remember seeing Star Trek in color -- easy to track down because of the Gods: "Who Mourns for Adonais?" (aired on 9/22/1967 and 5/10/1968), pinpointing it exactly to one of two dates (no other recourse, no videotaping, TiVo, no on-demand then). The colors were wild, garish even. It may have been at home in our apartment or at a friend's place.

These pop to mind:
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Man From U.N.C.L.E.
I Spy
Mission: Impossible

Land of the Giants!
Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, Outer Limits

The only TV restrictions were derived from competition with the rest of the family -- who wanted to watch what when?  My parents didn't try to shelter us from violent TV -- the whole word was violent!  We lived in Chicago!

Now anyone can watch just about anything at any time, and if not now, certainly in the near future. Complete freedom, anarchy and entropy . . . for the good and bad and in-between.

Today's Rune: Growth.

The Untouchables
Dragnet
Adam West as Batman (the old man didn't get to choose everything)
The Monkees
The Avengers
Davy Crockett
and of course Walter Cronkite every night.

Now that I see it I think we watched too much TV

SO sorry now that I missed all of these except for Star trek (First season only) and Land of the giants, which I liked a lot. SOme of the rest I watched in reruns later, but I would have liked seeing TIme tunnel and DArk shadows for sure.

I hear you about colors on TV back then! Gads...look at the old Batman and Star Trek episodes! I watch some Star Trek these days and I'm still like...WOAH! However, we seem to have swung in the opposite direction. Artistically, after being accused of using "bright colors" (which, evidently, is just unacceptable,) I'm having to mute things out to virtual colorlessness more & more. I miss living in a colorful world, which may be why I spend more time in nature than around people & man-made things.

WM, it seems like we had more time to do it all ~ I guess we kind of did . . . still ad time for school, running around outside getting into mischief, looking at books and swallowing gobs of TV. Charles, reruns is hows I absorbed all those surrealistic 60s shows, Bev Hillbillies and all that jazz. Lana -- agreed. I do like urban colors, as well, vibrant and even dramatic. A drive down Gratiot Avenue in Detroit is like that.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,
Lost in Space

and there was also:
The Man from UNCLE,
It's About Time,
F Troop,
and even "Misterogers" ("personal friend of mine")
