1968-2012: Global Urbanization

Taking 1968 ("Revolutionary Year Zero") as a baseline and 2012 as a checkpoint Charlie, how much of the world's people power lives in urban areas? In 1968, about one in three people lived in a city or otherwise urban setting. As of this post, more than one in two do. By mid-century or so -- if this trend continues -- it'll be more like two in three.

This is important to know for many reasons, not least of which is for city planning and maintenance of ecosystems, food, air and water quality, socio-economics, politics, transportation, communications and culture. In other words, it's important to consider this stuff so we can think beyond the confusion of current TV and pop culture chatter.

Today's Rune: Signals.
