This Is Not Your City

I just happened to catch part of a Lena Dunham interview on the radio and then, with conciousness raised, came across Girls, her new show on HBO. The very first episode -- yes! Loved it. It takes a clear-eyed look at a crew of 20-something women and their auxiliaries who've come to New York City in part because of Sex and the City. Only in this case, their actual world turns out not to be quite so glamorous. But they're just starting out, really. This is a well-written show and deserves to be sampled, especially if you're interested in stories with urban settings.

Second on the agenda, Caitlin Horrocks' debut, This Is Not Your City: Stories (Louisville, Kentucky: Sarabande Books, 2011). Eleven short stories, 169 pages. A variety of settings in the US and other parts of the world. Literary fiction, funny with bite. I find "It Looks Like This" particularly interesting in how it incorporates screenshots of maps, photos and a diagram into the overall text. "World Champion Cow of the Insane" does some similar stuff, with enclosed notes and email references. You want some Michigan? You got it! Like Girls, worth checking out. Though "City" is in the title, Horrocks' book is not at all restricted to urban settings.

Today's Rune: Fertility.

I was prepared for GIRLS after TINY FURNITURE. I was not bowled over but not scared away.
