The Eyes Have Wings

I'm not big on making lists of top this or that, Jimi Hendrix vs. Guitar Player X, yadda yadda yadda, but if I did have to list three of the "most interesting" directors "in the world" since the beginning of film, motion picture shows, cinema and the movies, I'd place Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) in there, Jean-Luc Godard (b. 1930) and Werner Herzog (b. 1942). As of right here, right now. And I do have reasons. There may be others as worthy, but if so I haven't seen enough (or any) of their films yet. Am I missing anybody?

That's quite an iconoclastic list! All I can do is try to match it with an alternate three: Manoel de Oliveira, John Cassavetes and F.W. Murnau. But this exercise for me is impossible; the list of German/Austrian directors alone is astounding: Lang, von Stroheim, Lubitsch, von Sternberg, Ulmer, Wilder, Preminger, Siodmak, Mann, Sirk, Thome, Nichols, Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders, Haneke, Emmerich, Tykwer...

Thanks for the comments -- much appreciated. Über Cool. I look forward to catching up on Manoel de Oliveira. I like Murnau and Cassavates, Lang, von Stroheim, Lubitsch, Wilder, Premminger, Wenders. Von Sternberg I’ve only seen Blue Angel and Blonde Venus. Fassbinder is a little too much, although I’ve only dabbled. Haven’t seen any Ulmer yet. Only a handful of Siodmak (eg. The Killers). Not sure which Mann or Thome you’re referencing here, WAS. Sirk, Tykwer and Haneke – have barely sampled. No more than one or two films each. Mike Nichols – check. Not a fan of Emmerich (hated The Patriot).

Of all these, I’m most excited to see more of Manoel de Oliveira. Cheers ~!
