Before wireless mobile phones, cellphones and any telephones at all, there is the period of new railroads and new telegraph networks. Telegraphy transmitted by Morse Code kicks into gear in the 1840s, just in time for the US-Mexican War. By 1852, the US has gone from zero miles of wire to 23,000.

And how much we come to depend on that communication. Having more troubles with our internet connection. really wish we could get something that would work consistently. And now our phone is out as well. Still a third world country down here.
