Lightning Hopkins: Once Was A Gambler
Another Lightning Hopkins song I couldn't find the lyrics to on the internet. My transcription, as best I can make out:
Once Was A Gambler*
Yeah you know I once was a gambler
But I lost my money roll
Yeah I once was a gambler
Boy but I lost my money roll
That’s the reason I don’t have no sweet woman
Now I done lost my happy home.
You gamble away that doggone money
He sit around with his head hung down
When he lost that old doggone money
You’ll sit around with your head hung low
You’ll try to borrow you fifty dollars
To start all over again in another town
Too late you done lose
Your friends don’t pay you no mind.
Baby if you will forgive me
I won’t gamble no more
If you will forgive me, baby (Lord have mercy)
Poor Lightning won’t gamble no more
She says I can’t help ya now
Sold out to the Devil -- ain’t that a way to go?
And I couldn’t help but cry
I cried like this – [guitar solo].
She said I didn’t want you to go gamblin’ Lightnin’
You know who I am – I’m your wife
She said I didn’t want you to go gamblin’ Lightnin’
You know who I am – I am your wife
She says look here, brother
Just like you lost your money
You had a good chance to lose your life
So go ahead on, Lightning.

I've never yet been in this predicament, but can empathize. Most of us have some kind of addiction or obsession, yes?

Sounds like a great song! Happy Wednesday!!!
I have a friend whos husband got addicted to gambling. He spent all his money, most of hers, charged up a fortune on credit cards. Sad thing this gambling addiction. I'm glad I never had to go through anything like that.
We have plenty of inmates that go into protective custody because they can't pay off their gambling debts. There's no honor among thieves; they don't seem to mind betting what they don't have. Gotta love the blues.
Have you seen Casino Royale yet? I saw it last week. It's very, very good. Anyway, I am tagging you. Go to my blog for more details. Thanks!
Bond rocks!!!!! Always!!!!
What a wonderful depiction of addiction. Nice.
