Trans-Europe Express

Fiona Apple's birthday. Are those alien eyes? Is she one of the Cat People? Extraordinary Machine came out a couple years ago.

Melli Beese's birthday. Her life story -- good material for a novel or movie. First woman pilot in Germany, had to fight like hell to get there.

Beese (1886-1925) survived extensive injuries from plane crashes, marriage to a Frenchman, the Great War, and divorce. Then, in 1925, she killed herself -- with a pistol. Looks particularly fierce here.

Jacqueline Bisset with Steve McQueen in Bullitt (1968), which I first saw as a kid -- with my family -- at a drive-in theater and just saw again recently. Ms. Bisset (and Steve McQueen, for that matter) always struck me as cool.

Be kind to animals, says Stella McCartney. Meanwhile, her many fans are screaming "Stella!" in unison. I'll add, "Happy birthday, Stella!" Here she looks almost as fierce as Melli Beese.

Today's Rune: Strength.

Birthdays: Walter Reed, Milton S. Hershey, John Black Jack Pershing, Sherwood Anderson, Melli Beese (Amelie Hedwig Boutard-Beese), Claudette Colbert, Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Bisset, Fred Sonic Smith, Don Was, Emma Sjöberg Wiklund, Stella McCartney, Fiona Apple (McAfee Maggart).

Ciao!

I haven't heard anything from Apple for years. Didn't know she was still making music. I liked some stuff off her first album. "Criminal."

We didn't see "Bullitt," but we saw Steve McQueen at the drive in in "Nevada Smith" on a double bill with a Western called "The Deserter," which I thought was good at the time, though it's all but forgotten I guess.
