Deus Ex Machina

Carla Bruni . . . former model and current artiste . . . now accompanies Nicolas Sarkozy, the freshly re-divorced president of France . . . Comparable to Angelina Jolie and Helen of Troy in shaking things up, she previously "stole" novelist Justine Lévy's husband and has dated Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Kevin Costner, Donald Trump, etc. No Promises (2007), Bruni's latest album, puts Anglo-American poetry to music. She's been compared to such 1960s icons as Marianne Faithfull, Anita Pallenberg, and Nico.

Meanwhile, Justine Lévy has written her own darker version of the Carla Bruni affair in her 2004 novel Rien de grave / Nothing Serious (2005).

In other French soap opera dramatics, Valerie Begue -- Miss France 2008 (and Miss Réunion) -- will remain as such, but must pass her torch to Vahinerii Requillart, first runner-up (and Miss New Caledonia) as far as the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants go. The magazine Entrevue printed risque pictures of Ms. Begue that break the rule of prior posing/exhibiting "in dubious outfits or poses, partially or totally nude." I love that -- in dubious outfits or poses, indeed . . .

Of course, it's all ridiculous but oh so civilized and -- absurd . . . . .

Ms. Requillart, new Regent for Miss France in the next cycle of pageants. New Caledonians must be all proud.

Today's Rune: Possessions.

I thought only the Americans were so hung up.

Thanks for telling me about Ms Bruni. Had never heard of her before.

And so, I end 2007 having learned a few things--many things--I didn't know before.

Happy New Year!

ude,
Have you read Richard Hawkins' "The God Delusion"? It's a good one - biting, funny, and well-argued. In a rather different vein, "The World Without Us", by Alan Weisman is also a fascinating and thought-provoking read.

Here's one suggestion for eye-candy pics: Jenny Agutter (remember her?), around the time of "Logan's Run".

Peace and Happy New Year

(not that one, of course)
