It's a Political World

"The thing about the Vietnam War that troubles me as I look back was it was a political war. We had politicians making military decisions . . . . ." -- George W. Bush, "Meet the Press with Tim Russert," 2/8/2004.

Archy Hamilton, on his way to enlist in the Australian Light Horse to reinforce the Anglo-French attack against the crumbling Ottoman Empire in 1915: "We don't stop them there, they could end up here." Here being the Australian Outback. Them being Johnny Turk. (Peter Weir's Gallipoli, 1981).

Today's Rune: Constraint.

Maybe it is time to invite them here for a fight? After all they have the oil to come here and die and we have the guns to kill them with.

I hate to say it . . . but I like the quote!
HI ERIK :)
Dontcha just hate 'constraint?' As a fellow Sag, I know dats a bad word for us! haha
I have to get my Runes out again - I get a little fearful of them because of their accuracy and me hearing what I don't want to hear or not hearing what I want to hear (half full / half empty!)

Thanks all for the comments!
Lindy -- hate constraint, of course!

You don't see the dark humor of the current (for another 300 days or so) political commander in chief who launched his own elective war (Iraq) trying to explain why he didn't volunteer for service in Vietnam?

Bill Clinton opposed Vietnam, and protested it. McCain's response? "War? I want me a bloddy chunk of the action! Who do I get to bomb next?"

That old canard-- "We have to fight them there.."

When the Iraq War started, we were talking about it at work (I was still a teacher then) and we were stunned when the teacher who was our union rep, parroting her right-wing husband's words, said it was better to fight them over there rather than here. We were too stunned to say anything.
