W. Matters

I. Oliver Stone's W. is most definitely worth seeing.

G.W. Bush may only be president for another three (long) months, but he's been in office for nigh onto eight years, long enough so that a person who was ten when he was elected can now legally vote. Certainly anyone under thirty would benefit from this refresher. It is empathetic, yes, but more importantly, reminds us all how we got into Iraq and why we're still there.

Two characters come off well -- Laura Bush and Colin Powell. That's about it. One character is dismissed as a weird sycophant -- Condoleezza Rice (this I appreciate, because up until now the "Mainstream Media" has mostly treated her with kid gloves). The rest of the characters are no surprise -- we already know about Dick Cheney and the rest of the ship of fools. But it's good to see a narrative perspective, and Josh Brolin is right on the money as the Man Who Would Be King.

II. For some reason, I'm on Republican mass email distribution lists. Frankly, I'm glad -- I can see specifically how stupid and evil they are (in 2008) by their own infantile and utterly ridiculous words (and not just via Palinism and other forms of crypto-fascism).

Here's a steaming pile of crap sent by ghoulish Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah c/o The National Republican Senatorial Committee (which has the unintended twist of inspiring me to send more money to Obama-Biden and the Democrats):

The liberal Senate leadership already has the bills drafted to force its radical agenda on American families:

Crippling new taxes
Staggering new government spending
Outrageous paybacks to labor bosses
Liberal censorship of talk radio

Now, with only a few weeks to go, liberals can taste it -- they believe that they will seize control of the Senate and guarantee a liberal agenda straight out of the 1970s.

We can see what these "senatorial Republicans" fear. But what are they talking about re: "Liberal censorship of talk radio"? Does anyone know the basis of this one? Oooh, Liberals. Oooh, Socialists. I'm really scared now. . . . . If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Today's Rune: Possessions.

This election season, the whole two years of it, should be named in the history books as "The descent into insanity by the right."

No claim is too outrageous, no lie to demeaning, no racist rant to inflammatory. Yet the right could still pull it off, maybe not in the congress, but in the administrative, they still have a shot.

If there's one movie I have NO interest in seeing it is "W." We just had nearly 8 years, I can't volunteer for another 2 hours.

Unfortunately I'm with Charles on this one. Besides his reason, I can't even stand to see or hear the REAL W w/o losing my lunch.
The psychological use of words like "crippling" in the e-mail is so manipulative. Go figure.

I agree with Charles. 8 years was too much.
Not another minute. MW
