Holy Smoke, Batman
Thoroughly enjoyed the Academy Awards. An elegant show, and civilized. Winners include: Kate Winslet (pictured here from Holy Smoke, 1999); Penélope Cruz via Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona; Sean Penn via Gus Van Sant's Milk; Heath Ledger; and various for Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle (compare with his Iggy Pop-fueled Trainspotting, 1996, a darker classic).
Today's Rune: Opening.

I'm not sure I've ever watched the academy awards. Maybe a bit in the old days.
Holy Smoke's turning up on IFC of late. I need to fit it into my schedule.
I read while the Oscars were on last night, turning up the volume for such moments as Ben Stiller's appearance with beard and sunglasses.
there was some award show? Hm must have missed it.
Winslet's father has a great whistle.--Oscar Winner
I don't watch award shows of any kind (although I do like to read about the Razzies.) They're all circle jerks for people who's egos are too large, already. In a similar vein, just because Rolling Stone magazine claims their list represents the "10 best" albums or whatnot, doesn't make it true.
I think it's nice to watch such shows, it keeps your mind away from Politics and the Economy. I cant wait to see Slumdog Millionare. Happy for Heathledger and Sean Penn, they deserved it
