Salaam Bombay!
Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! (1988) is another survival tale set mostly in Mumbai/Bombay. For those riding high on Slumdog Millionaire (2008), it may a good prequel. Nair has made a number of thoughtful films, including Mississippi Masala (1991) and Hysterical Blindness (2002), that touch on gender, age, race, class and place. More on all of these at some point, I suspect.
Today's: Standstill.

Hey Eric, I am probably the only person to have seen 'Hysterical Blindness.' It was so bad it was good!
I heard good things about Mississippi Masala but I'm afraid I never got to see it.
I love foreign movies
