In Praise Also of Books

After recently singing the praises of digital texts, let me now praise traditional format books and journals, too. Like many, for longer works I much prefer reading a codex book than a computer screen.

Here are images of the oldest book in my domicile at the moment, a 1795 edition of Alexander Pope's English language version of The Iliad of Homer. And it looks about that old, even if in the grand scheme of things that's not very long ago. Detroit was part of the British Empire at the time, and George Washington was president of the United States. Pretty cool, eh?

Books like this one are probably best housed in a Rare Book Department in special air conditioned areas.

Still, it's nice to see how things are both essentially the same and yet also quite different in the world of books. Spelling is a little different, the pages look hand-sewn, and the binding is leather: but anyone over five can still recognize that it's a book. And that's hip.

Today's Rune: The Self. A final salute to the Red Wings, until next year.

In seeing the book, the images that come to mind is that each letter, each piece of punctuation and every page had to be set by hand and printed using manual labor. Imagine everything that went into the process before the page even hit the press.

The Walking Man - Considering the tiny print on the pages, that is actually pretty awe inspiring. Or maybe the correct phrase might be 'Holy Crap' inspiring.
