Stones in Exile: Take One

Finally finished Stones in Exile completely. The archival footage alone is worth a watch, but it's also really interesting. The tribe. The creative processes. England to France to the USA. How it all "transgressed."

Exile on Main St is the main reason I put the Rolling Stones at the top of the heap; this record -- or CD or download -- is one I'd want for a desert isle, or on a spaceship. Am savoring the idea of getting the expanded version with extra tracks. Tracks like "Pass The Wine (Sophia Loren)" sound real cool.  The album endures, I think, because you can never fully absorb it or lay it aside: it keeps giving, like a lovin' cup.

Today's Rune: Protection.

I wonder what the Stones would've done if they had to cut their teeth into a music business like today's ... then again, they seem to keep going strong. It probably wouldn't've mattered.

I just listened to the entire "Exile" album yesterday afternoon while cooking dinner-- still sounds great. IMHO, the greatest rock and roll album ever.

They've played a couple of the outtakes from the recent reissue on Little Steven's Underground Garage, and I have to say that they probably should remain outtakes; they're not as strong as the songs that made it onto the final mix.

I read recently that Graham Parsons showed up to their estate while they were recording "Exile" and that he was doing so many drugs that Keith Richards asked him to leave. Man, if Keith Richards tells you you're doing too many drugs, you'd better listen!
