Fifty Years Plus One

Things do change and things do happen. Now that Qaḏḏāfī / Gaddafi and bin Laden are dead, it's as good as time as any to take a quick look at the contenders for US President in 2012. This time fifty-one years ago, JFK and Dick Nixon were battling it out. As close as the election would be, I'm guessing that neither man would have been too thrilled to know how their life-arcs would go from there.

Of the Republicans running this time around, Mitt Romney looks like the one to beat. Sure, he's a Mormon, but Kennedy (a Democrat) was Catholic and still won, albeit in a very close election.  All things being equal, who else is there on the Republican side? Cain and Perry have vague longshot hopes, the rest are marginal by any standard except for Ron Paul, who has a core base. I give him no chance at all. For 2012 as in 2008, my money (literally) goes with the Democrat -- Barack Obama -- without hesitation. All in all, it'll be a hotly contested election, and in 2008 swing states like North Carolina, every vote will count in 2012, too.

SNL certainly is having fun with the candidates, especially the Cain skit involving the 3-3-3 plan.

I need to watch one of the Republican debates and see if any of them are less scary than the others.
