Feng Shui, American Style
Summer's finally here for real, so I can concentrate on de-cluttering accumulated junk (a constant challenge, given endless paperwork, writing, notes, receipts, and mail). I haven't read Karen Kingston's marvelous Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui (1999) in years, but have absorbed the gist of it. Kingston has a lot of pragmatic ideas and a sound Asian philosophy to draw from. While I'm not sure I can fully adopt all of the Asian specifics, I do try to make them work with American style.
Born in England, Kingston moved to mostly peaceful serene Bali, and lived there at least part time for many years (still does, last I checked). The basic idea is this: your living and working spaces reflect your inner life. When you work on rearranging the energies of these spaces, you also work on rearranging your internal energies. I feel and think that she is correct, and that feng shui is very helpful, even if one only draws on some of its specific suggestions and underlying philosophy.
If anyone has experience with feng shui, I'd love to hear about it. Meanwhile, I'll be rolling up my sleeves and setting to work!

I love fortune cookies! My best friends husband just bought me a huge bag full and I have a handful of fortunes already... Some deal with luck, one with money, but my favorite says You will find happiness in matrimony. HAHA! I should show that one to my boyfriend. hehe he'd probably run away! Great post today!
Hey Erik,
I'm not sure feng shui would do me any good, especially at work. From what I've observed, the neatniks with the clean desks never have much work to do anyway, while poor blokes like me are continuously getting more work piled onto our desks. Maybe it's just negative energy from working in a prison. As far as home, just as messy--maybe feng shui approach there. Old habits are hard to break. --Jim
My living room, where my computer/desk is, is cluttered right now with my daughter's hamster & other goodies from her room. My husband just fixed a leak, we got a new roof, and now it's time for the clean up! Clearing the clutter does seem to bring renewed energy, though.

Today's rune: Separation, then Signals.
Thanks all, for the comments! Fortune cookies are fun, as are the runes. It seems like we Americans have at least three spaces that can go to pot: our vehicles, our dwellings, and our workspaces. It's a balancing act that can be hard to maintain, especially under stressful workloads. Denny Conrad, one of my history teachers, had a sign on his piled high desk that read: "TOO MUCH NEATNESS IS THE SIGN OF A SICK MIND." Always made me chuckle. The only place I've seen that was completely spotless and empty seemed souless and kind of spooky -- like a Swiss assassin's abode. Or an android's. I'm aiming for the middle ground.
Cheers, Erik
I hear ya, Erik. Or a museum...not lived in. Maybe I need to post that sign on my refrigerator! lol Congrats on reaching over 17000 on your profile views! Cheers, R
