Thomas Pynchon: Against the Day

And speaking of V-rockets, Thomas Pynchon (May 8, 1937-) has a new book coming out soon via Penguin, possibly in December. Against the Day tweaks history and goes from there, not unlike much of Philip K. Dick's ouvre and Philip Roth's The Plot Against America (2004).

Pynchon is a writer very much interested in history, and in getting at the strange ways we've gotten to where we are now. He showcases some unusual aspects of things not always covered in textbooks, to say the least. Let's not forget V (1963), The Crying of Lot 49 (1966), Gravity's Rainbow (1973), Slow Learner (1984), Vineland (1990), or Mason & Dixon (1997). Ah, the mystery. More will be revealed.

Where do you start with Pyncheon? He's the notoriously unphotographed one, isn't he? Where would a beginner best begin?

Thanks for the comments! Richard, I'd go with the only easy one first, The Crying of Lot 49. The others are ridiculously long, but if you like the little one, maybe V or Gravity's Rainbow. Yeah, like Salinger, he's mostly unphotographed. Something about Cornell Univ., I guess. Cheers, E'

Cheers Erik. Holidays are here - so I kight seen The Crying of Lot49 out

By the way: I've been thinking about politics and pop since your post in the topic, and wondering if they ever mix well. And coincidentally I then stumble across Jarvis Cocker's (ex of Pulp) MySpace site and he's made a song about the same subject. Mentioning Geldof, he opines that despite the Irish one's efforts, entitled "C**nts are still running the world." To do with Live8 etc. http://myspace.com/jarvspace

Cheers mate - I'm gonna take a cyber rest for a few days. Keep up the good work.

Hey Richard,

hope you have a nice cyber-break and thanks for the link and thoughts. If you don't like Pynchon's wacky style, better to find out with a The Crying of Lot 49 than with a larger tome :-> Of course, if you do like it, then bigger treats down the line. Cheers back to ya'
