Victory Gardens of the 21st Century

In the cool develoments department: Michelle Obama breaking ground for a new garden on the White House grounds in Washington, DC. (Photo by Joyce N. Boghosian, White House website).

Which reminds me of Johnny Appleseed and the need to plant more trees in public spaces, everywhere from school grounds to shopping center parking lots. Trees that are hearty and don't require tons of water, depending on geography and climate.

Yes, we can.

First full day of spring. Today's Rune: Movement.

This post reminds me of a young man I met years ago in Toronto. He'd single-handedly planted over a million trees in various places around the world. I had a lot of respect for him & wished that I could say the same for myself...

More trees. An idea whose time has long since come.

That's pretty cool. So is it trees that the Obama's are planting? If not I wonder what kind of garden it is then.

I had to laugh when the majority of articles I read about the first lady's new garden had more to do with what she wore while digging than the reason she was putting in her garden.

Man if nothing else I hope the Obama family can help us get our journalistic priorities straight again i.e. Paul Harvey and Murrow.

I thought it was great when I read that. We have a small organic garden and was happy to see that the White House would have one as well.

I remember(only sort of) in the seventies, being part of some conservation group that spent saturdays planting trees all over northern Michigan. Now as an old broad, I cant only hope someone else is doing it now!
