Lisa Moorish

Lisa Moorish could probably stand a little promotion. Normally she's connected to certain pop stars gone wild, but she warrants her own post. She fronts Kill City (or alternately, KillCity / Killcity), a British band whose name apparently derives from the 1977 Iggy Pop/James Williamson album Kill City, and might hint at their sound, too.

From an older Kill City website: "Imagine Blondie if they had been from Brixton and spent too much time in Berlin." Influences include Blondie, X-Ray Spex, Kraftwerk, and Joy Division, all bands I like (catchy, if a little dark).

Of those influences, the lesser-known-in-the-USA X-Ray Spex was a memorable early punk band fronted by Poly Styrene. Who could forget -- if they ever got to hear it -- "Oh Bondage, Up Yours" (1977)? Their one disc is Germ Free Adolescent (1978); they are prominent in Lech Kowalski's rising punk documentary, D.O.A. (1980).

If not as long as Poly Styrene, Lisa Moorish has been around much longer than Kill City, but her latest latest release with them is the mini-album (what used to be called an EP, I suppose), Hooligans on E (2005).

Back in 1995, Moorish released "I'm Your Man," a cover of the Wham song, not the one by Leonard Cohen.

When I get more samples of Kill City's sound, I'll follow this up with a little special something. As for the daisy chain soap opera connections, those, too.

Today's Rune: Protection.

Toodles!

I have to admit I honestly don't remember her...

Hey Sheila, thanks for the comment. She's had kids with more famous pop stars, and her own career hasn't really blasted off. Hopefully for her, it still will.
