US forces are pulling back to their bases outside of Iraqi cities -- or out of the country altogether. President Obama is following through on his long-standing pledge, with the apparent support of large majorities of Iraqis and Americans. More data pending from Iraq, but check this out:
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll found that 73 percent of Americans favored the withdrawal of US combat troops, while 26 percent were opposed.
Support for the troop pullback crosses US political party lines, with 72 percent of Democrats and 74 percent of Republicans favoring the move. (Source: AFP, "Three-fourths in US support troop pullback in Iraq: poll," June 30, 2009).
