Love is All Around: Everybody Must Get Stoned, Hanged, or Burned at the Stake

Jan Hus, burned at the stake in 1485.* The question is: should anyone be put to death by vested authorities? Or rather, is it ever really ethical or moral so to do?

Given recent beheadings and other global forms of capital punishment, it's pretty sickening. On the other hand, who wants to support keeping people like Charles Manson alive for decades? Tough question. Either way, we fall short. We seem to be a half-assed sort of species.

Although it definitely should not be routine, I do support the death penalty in certain cases.

I've had this page bookmarked for years...what I see there convinces me, when I leave there and the better stains of my humanity colors the world I am not so sure.

There has been no DP in MI since 1837so I have no idea what that collective feeling of the citizens are when one of these convicts is executed.

I do believe though that lethal injection is, if there is going to be a way, the most humane way. Not this "off with their heads or bullet in the back of the brain" method of other countries.

Erik, I have argued both sides of that case for years. I guess I sway depending on the crime. Can't wait to see what J.R. says on this one.

After working with Amnesty International, I came to oppose the death penalty for many reasons. Here in Illinois, we've had a number of high profile cases where innocent people were on death row. In an imperfect legal system, I can in good conscience condone the death penalty.

This believe has become very personal for me, after the murder of one of my closest friends. He was recently convicted of murdering one of his accomplices in the robbery that resulted in my friend's murder, and I will be going to the sentencing on Wednesday. They will also start the trial in my friend's murder. I still oppose the death penalty for the murderer. But I sure wouldn't mind kicking his ass myself.

I'll say it...I'm for the death penalty. If it's the state's involvement that bothers some, let's leave the application of justice to the victims, instead.
