I remember staying up late to see Monty Python's Flying Circus when it first aired on PBS in the 1970s while living in Durham, North Carolina. It left an indelible impression, as did some of the movies. Have barely seen any of it in original form since then, but these folks were (and are) pure genius -- and more than a bit "barmy on the crumpet."
Monty Python obviously made a huge impression on many people. This week, IFC will air Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The Lawyers Cut) in six parts, October 18-23, 2009, 9:oo p.m. EST. For more, see: http://www.ifc.com/monty-python-almost-truth-lawyers-cut/
Aside from PBS, IFC provides one of the best TV channels available to Americans.

I've been working on a post in the near future about Python-- basically about how it saved my (actually our-- you're about the same age as me) generation. It aired for the first time in Chicago in 1974. I found out about it from an article in the Tribune-- I saved the article for years. I couldn't believe that someone in the world had the same sense of humor as I did.
They were a huge influence on SNL and others. I bought the DVD box set a few years ago, and have started working through it with my son. I realized I have raised him right when he laughed at the part in the "Killer joke" sketch where they allude to "Britain's pre-war joke," and have a clip of Chamberlain waving the Munich Accords as he steps off of the airplane.
We are very lucky to be the same age as Barack Obama. Malcom Gladwell points out the luck and beauty of growing up in the same age group.
That's cool about you and your son's joint enjoyment. Looking forward to your post!
I saw this was going to be on and told Lana. She's a huge Monty python fan.
Why I do believe I actually get that channel.
Erik, never much of a Monty P. fan, altho my son loves him.
I started watching the marathon last night, myself. ;)
Thanks all for the comments!
Lana, pretty interesting, eh? All those precursor shows, and the background. . .
