A Failure in Propaganda?

Has anyone noticed this horrid ad put up by the "Americans Against Food Taxes"? As far as I'm concerned, it backfires. Given existing taxes on beer, wine and "hard" drinks, why not place a small new tax on soda and other soft drinks? Seems like an excellent way to raise needed revenue. Why not? They have a website, by all means explore the institutions putting up the front money for this failed anti-government propaganda. I doubt you'd be surprised, looking behind the veil. Rating on this ad: F.

Besides that, the "protagonist" comes across as a bratty soccer Mom from Palinville. She looks like she could use a new tax.

Today's Rune: Wholeness.

Missed this one. I wonder though why, now that every damn religion and church has stuck their pulpit into the middle of every political debate why the hell they are not taxed at the same rate as every other for profit business?

Here in Chicago, we have a tax on bottled soda pop. We also have a sales tax on food, but not meds. So much industry has left the city, they're desperate for any kind of revenue.

Haven't seen this one. I'll have to check it out.

I AGREE WITH THE WALKING MAN. HOW ABOUT THE PLACE WHERE THE SENATORS HANG OUT, CALLS IT SELF A CHURCH, IS RUN BY THE "FATHER". IT IS MORE POLITICAL THAN CHURCH LIKE YET GETS AWAY WITHOUT PAYING TAXES IN A VERY EXPENSIVE NEIGHBORHOOD. MEGA CHURCHES RAKE IN MILLIONS FROM THEIR FLOCK YET PAY NO TAXES. RELIGION IS A BUSINESS IN THIS COUNTRY.

Did you see the bit Jon Stewart did about that commercial? If not, it's probably on The Daily Show website.

Thanks all for the comments! Lana, thaks for the tip -- it is here (9/29/009), at the 6 minute mark, as part of Jon Stewart's take on "fake populist" campaigns. Excllent stuff: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-september-29-2009/where-the-riled-things-are

Yes, Certain aspects of organized religious activities should be taxable -- specifically when they enter politics and sell products.

Erik,

The problem I have with new taxes is that there is never an end to them. Our government wastes more money than most countries make.

More taxes? Why is there never any talk of cutting spending?

Erik Donald France said...

Panday, that's a very fair point. Waste, corruption and lack of accountability -- or tardy accounting, as in finally catching Kwame in Detroit; and all those contractor overruns everywhere in every sector. The old saw about death & taxes is all too true. Thanks for the comment.
