Jean-Luc Godard: Made in USA, Part 1

Jean-Luc Godard's Made in USA (1966): visuals mix with words, and the loud outside world punctuates thoughts. Instead of suppressing or covering up ambient noises, Godard makes sure we hear them: airplanes taking off and landing, cars and trucks rumbling by, taxi horns and gunfire. Godard doesn't want us to escape the "real" world. Life is messy, and there are forces more powerful than us always intruding. He seems to be suggesting this: as individuals, it's good to try to be aware of these things, and to make existential choices accordingly.

Paula Nelson (Anna Karina) arrives in Atlantic-Cité to unravel the mystery of Richard (Dick) P, her sometimes lover. Why? She feels "indebted," though she hasn't seen him in a while. Somehow he was mixed up in political maneuvering. As another character points out, "It was worse here than Marseille or Chicago."

"Yes," Nelson quips, "we were in a political movie. Meaning Walt Disney with blood."

During a pensive interlude set in a bar, Marianne Faithfull sings "As Tears Go By."
