The Venerable Pierre Toussaint

Who was the Venerable Pierre Toussaint (1766-1853)? His is an astonishing story. He began his life in slavery on Saint-Domingue / Santo Domingo / Haiti  and ended up a free man in New York City, a successful hairdresser, philanthropist, and, since 1996, Venerable Catholic moving in the direction of Sainthood.  I came across a reference to his correspondence archived in the New York Public Library, and am curious to find out more. A key early component in his life: learning how to read.

Today's Rune: Breakthrough.

That was key to holding slaves back-not allowing them to read. What a cruel thing among many.
