Ondi Timoner: Dig!

Ondi Timoner's Dig! / DiG! / DIG! (2004) follows "friendly rival" bands The Brian Jonestown Massacre (BJM) and The Dandy Warhols through periods of trial and tribulation. A dramatic spotlight shines intermittently on BJM's talented, volatile frontman, Anton Newcombe. Dig! is fascinating but, according to the bands' stated responses, controversial.

Both of these bands are successful artistically and, by "big band" standards, have attained moderate success financially. Luckily for fans, because they tend to play in small to medium sized venues instead of mega-stadiums. The BJM is scheduled for The Granada Theater in Dallas next month (on April 27, 2012) and I intend to be there. Both bands have  a cool sound with a neo-60s vibe.

I like the bands' names, but they probably seem a little too bizarre for mass consumption. What's in a name? The Rolling Stones is a hip name, as is The Velvet Underground. The Stooges / Iggy & The Stooges and The Ramones: pithy and slightly comical. A bit more menacing sounding: Black Sabbath, Public Enemy, Howlin' Wolf, The Sex Pistols, N.W.A., Dead Kennedys. Psychedelic: Led Zeppelin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Any other band names that stand out?

Today's Rune: Gateway.

The Dandy warhols. I remember hearing of that band. Don't know any of their music.
