A Curious Bird

A special up close visitor for Father's Day in Saxapahaw -- an Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) apparently utilizing facial recognition ability. This was especially well-timed because my Dad loves these little ones, brought back from near-catastrophic losses in the Silent Spring years decades ago out of luck, pluck and good will. We observed some interesting behavior. In addition to a lot of zipping around the area in tight triangular insect-hunting zigzag patterns, this Bluebird seemed to enjoy coming right up to the edge of my parents' porch for a moment of salutation. Traditionally, a good omen or sign.

Today's Rune: Defense.

On occasion we get bluebirds here in our yard. We seem them more commonly at the local parks. They are apparently shy of people.

Erik, I have an insane number of birds in my yard considering that I do not feed them. I have a 'pet' cardinal that we call Mr. C! He lets me get very close to him and looks in my window and sings away!
