Gloria: In Her Own Words

HBO's Gloria: In Her Own Words, directed by Peter Kunhardt (HBO Documentary Films Summer Series), showcases Gloria Steinem's life and times. Her words, combined with fantastic archival footage, make this a notable contribution to the historical and cultural record. Feminism, Ms. magazine and the socio-political milieu of the past half centry as seen from Steinem's point of view -- a compelling take on things. Hopefully (surely?) this will inspire more exploration, wider and deeper examinations of the bigger context.

Dear reader, can you pick a favorite famous feminist leader, past or present?  Or, maybe an influential leader who is (or was) also a feminist?  This can go back quite a ways, despite the fact that, globally, adult women as a class have enjoyed the legal right to vote for less than a hundred years.  Don't even get me started on places like Saudi Arabia today . . .

Saw part of this and it took me back. She always managed to be a good role model. But my hero would be Betty Friedan. She invented feminism.

Hypatia, beautiful, intelligent and murdered by the mob. Some men fear strong woman. Some women fear strong women. The fight to be seen and treated as an equal is an ongoing battle.

Feminism in Nigeria would utterly depress you. Even our president is progressive relative to the average foreign-educated 30-year-old girl here.
